The love that Filipinos have for K-dramas is undeniable. Various shows of the genre have been constantly on Filipino TV, and they’re religiously viewed by an enormous fan base. Their themes, storytelling, and characters touch the heart of Filipinos, especially the Millennials. It’s no surprise that social media platforms have a legion of hashtags about these shows. But which ones do people talk about the most online? To identify the hottest Koreanovelas in the Philippines, we looked at the hashtag counts:
#Goblin – 44,676
Topping the list by a landslide is the K-drama series, Goblin, also known as Guardian: The Lonely and Great God. It stars Gong Yoo, a popular South Korean actor known for his roles in Train to Busan (2016) and Coffee Prince (2007). In the show he plays a mythical creature called a Dokkaebi and unexpectedly falls for an orphan he meets. With a unique plot and a mesmerizing production design, the supernatural love story has undoubtedly become a smash hit with Filipinos.
#WeightLiftingFairy – 6,633
Second in hashtag counts is the romantic comedy series, Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo. It tells the tale of a talented weightlifter played by South Korean actress Lee Sung-Kyung and follows her relationship with swimmer and fellow athlete Jung Joon-Hyuk (Nam Joo-Hyuk). The popular K-drama was inspired by the story of the South Korean Olympic Weightlifter Jang Mi-ran.
#DescendantsOfTheSun – 6,370
A close third in the list is Descendants of the Sun. This Koreanovela is about an unlikely couple: Shi Jin (Song Joong-ki), a captain of the Korean Special forces and Mo-Yeon (Song Hye-Kyo), a doctor who serendipitously attends to a patient connected to him. Interestingly, the two stars of the 2016 drama eventually wed in real life late last year, which might say a lot about the chemistry of the couple in the series!
